About Self Help

Self Help explores mental health through the lens of a relationship between therapist and patient using Movenglish® – an original movement language in progress that directly corresponds to English. In this language, the nuances of English (e.g. sound, meaning, connotation, tense, difficulty, part of speech etc.) are embodied in as objective a fashion as possible through both the accumulation of collective human intuitions and in-depth analyses of words and concepts. The direct translation of spoken conversations is complemented by fragmented and deconstructed phrases that represent what happens between the lines and inside the mind, embodying a ceaseless yet hopeful striving toward balance between thought and feeling, mind and body, self and other.

About Altofest

ALTOFEST NAPOLI 2023

“THE THIRD WALKING BESIDE US” - A project by Teatringestazione

Artistic Directors and Curators: Anna Gesualdi and Giovanni Trono

Dramaturg: Loretta Mesiti

ALTOFEST is a human-specific project that turns homes into performing art spaces after a period of co-habitation of artists with residents in a unique political act to reimagine a city as a community, united through art, questioning the relationship between artistic practices and daily life.

Nine international artists are coming to Naples to live and work in the homes of nine citizens residents.

“The third walking beside us” is a synthesis of the aesthetic matters emerging from the dramaturgy of Altofest Naples 2023. It represents the link between all the performances scheduled from 14th to 18th June.

The works that make up the programme invite us to dive into «One instance. An imperative makes space between two. An element of connection in the distance. Vital, primordial, impersonal, and third. No longer human, more than human: "The third walking beside us" .» - Can the poetic exception crack any code?

The clear reference to Eliot's “The Waste Land” helps us trace possible poetic paths between the Downtown and the Old Town, the Sanità and the Quartieri Spagnoli, along the streets of Altofest's Hovering City.

A dramaturgy that surfaces through careful observation of the more than 450 proposals received worldwide. A composition of works that imposes itself on our gaze and combines with the daily lives of the resident citizens, who, for a fortnight, host the artists in residence. To this newly born community, we hand over the task of cohabitation in the space of venture, which becomes the place of an unprecedented and shared language before opening up to the public.

PERFORMANCES

We invite you to track and follow the thread that binds the selected works. Among them is the renewed "phygital" experiment, a hybrid residency which engages artists in the process of live and remote co-presence, this year between Naples and Santander, committed to Alessandra Cozzolino (IT), who welcomes Babirusa

Danza (ES) into her body and home, with the performance "Brea y Plumas", which speaks to us of patriarchy starting from the social movement of the Indignados. "Self Help" by Mignolo Dance (US) reveals to us what goes on between the lines and within the mind, searching for a balance between self and other, thanks to Movenglish® - an original movement language system. "Al Cosmo" gives voice to the book "Tra le rose e le viole" (Between Roses and Violets) by Porpora Marcasciano through a workshop practice, a collective reading experience, a participatory reading led by Ateliersì (IT). With "Raw Eggs", Artemis Chrysostomidou (CY) introduces us to a familiar but oppressive environment in order to subvert it and make the uniqueness of the self triumph. A motion of rebellion explodes with "Hold me hold me hold" by Alina Belyagina (UKR), merging the real and the imaginary: a bestiary of sensual, delirious and rebellious bodies crossing the boundaries of body and nation. Those same boundaries that Fieldworks (NO/JP) dissolve with “Unannounced”, focusing on the way attention shifts when appearances suddenly change. A journey into the space between the “no longer” and the “not yet”. Questions about surveillance and social order emerge from “You Are The Mole” by Joe Snape (UK), a darkly optimistic look at the Cambridge Analytica data scandal of 2018-19. With its music and choreography not written in any key or manner, "Atonal" by CarlaxGuillermo (MEX) open up an irregular, perspective-breaking, out-of-code space. In addition to these is the extra-fest morning appointment with Antonino Talamo's Beat-Bang, a drum circle of bodily percussion.

TALKS, MEETINGS, SHARING

The program also includes public talks and moments of sharing about the aesthetic, poetic and political questions raised by Altofest as a device for experimental sociality. Multiform spaces of thought intertwine through the course of the performances, involving the audience, citizens, artists, scholars and professionals; thanks to Co.R, Community of Researchers, coordinated by Loretta Mesiti, in collaboration with Silvia Mei, Dario Gentili, Rosa Coppola, Maurizio Alampi, Claudia Fabris, Federica Terracina.

The Agorà is an Open Assembly bringing together the artists in residence and their hosts, the Space Donors, invited to exchange and reflect on the experience of “cohabitation” shared during the residency, responding to theoretical inputs offered by Co.R members. The 2023 topic is “Poetic Citizenship”.

The Voice Over is a series of daily conversations between the artists, jointly animated by the Co.R members and professionals. It is based on an analysis of the aesthetic elements of the performances featured in the programme.

The Journal outlines an aesthetic-theoretical guide for the Community of the Fest. A printed copy is distributed during the agora or at performance entrances.

Texture is a platform for international cultural experts, programmers, and designers, and this edition will join the Voice Over meeting of the artists.

The picnic is a shared break when the Altofest community gathers and discusses performances. Bring with you your packed lunch!

Radio Leib is the sound dimension of Altofest; it accompanies programming with interviews, audio testimonials, live and recorded. The editorial team is made up of donor citizens.

Afterfest, every evening we meet at Sciò, for the joy of being together!

Altofest's paths land in Ilaria Garzillo's visual-thinking, condense in Giuseppe Valentino's videos and Vicky Solli's photos, and echo on Radio Leib curated by Giovanni Passariello.

ALTOFEST is an artistic project of "human-specific" experimental sociality, born in Naples in 2011, aimed at GIVING RISE to a collective poetic dimension. Citizens, artists, scholars, and cultural experts, come together at each manifestation of the "HOVERING CITY" of Altofest, a space that surfaces from the union of the intimate dimension proper to the homes and families involved, with the aesthetic and poetic dimension proper to the works and artistic processes that citizens welcome in their houses.

The realisation of Altofest is curated by TEATRINGESTAZIONE, according to the principles of its own poetics and creative methodology, driven by the need to free the performative act from the sphere of spectacle, returning the assembly to the place of poetic making.
